They give you insider information about companies and roles while building relationships that may lead to opportunities down the line.

€” Identify one person worth talking to Look for someone who works at a company you are genuinely interested in, is in a role similar to or above the one you are targeting, or has made a career transition similar to the one you are considering.

€” Send a request message Template: "Hi [Name], I have been following your career and the work you do at [Company] and would love to learn more about your experience there. I am in [your field] and have been exploring different directions for my next move. Would you be open to a 20 minute virtual coffee chat sometime in the next few weeks? I am happy to work around your schedule."

€” Prepare 5 questions in advance Good questions for employed seekers:

What do you think differentiates strong candidates for roles like yours from average ones?

What do you wish you had known about [Company] before joining?

How would you describe the culture compared to other places you have worked?

What are the biggest opportunities for growth in this field right now?

Is there anyone else you would recommend I speak with?

Informational interviews are not the place to ask about job openings directly. If they bring it up that is fine. Otherwise let the relationship develop naturally.

Always send a brief thank you message within 24 hours of the conversation.
