WHY THIS MATTERS

The people who know and trust you are your most powerful job search resource. A referral from someone who knows your work is worth more than dozens of cold applications. Today you activate those relationships with an honest, direct conversation.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

€” Choose 3 people from your inner circle list Pick the ones most likely to have helpful connections or insight into your target companies or roles.

2
Step 2

€” Reach out with an honest message Because these are trusted contacts you can be more direct than with general networking outreach.

Template: "Hi [Name], I hope you are doing well. I wanted to reach out privately about something I am keeping fairly quiet for now. I have been thinking seriously about exploring new opportunities and am starting to look at roles in [area]. You know my work well and I trust your judgment completely, so I wanted to loop you in and ask if you have any connections at [company or industry] or any advice based on what you know about the market right now. I would really value your perspective."

3
Step 3

€” Be specific about what you are looking for The more specific you are the more helpful people can be. Tell them your target role, target industries, and what kind of move you are looking to make.

4
Step 4

€” Log the outreach in your tracker Note who you contacted, when, and what they said. Follow up on any leads they give you within 48 hours.

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Ask each person if there is anyone specific they would recommend you speak with. This is how your network expands even when you are being discreet.

Never ask an inner circle contact to make a referral on your behalf until you are further along and more certain about a specific role or company.
