WHY THIS MATTERS

LinkedIn has several settings that affect what your employer and colleagues can see about your activity. Getting these right protects your search while still allowing recruiters to find you.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

Go to Settings and Privacy on LinkedIn Click your profile photo in the top right, then Settings and Privacy.

2
Step 2

Turn off activity broadcasts Under Visibility, find Profile viewing options and set it to Private mode when browsing profiles of people you do not know well. Under Visibility of LinkedIn activity, turn off notifications to your network when you make profile changes.

3
Step 3

Set Open to Work to Recruiters Only Go to your profile, click Open to and select Finding a new job. Under who can see you are open, select Recruiters Only. This hides the green Open to Work banner from your current employer and colleagues while still signaling your availability to recruiters.

4
Step 4

Review your connections list visibility Under Settings, find who can see your connections and set it to Only you. This prevents your current employer from seeing if you suddenly connect with a large number of recruiters or people at competitor companies.

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

LinkedIn cannot guarantee that your current employer will never see your Open to Work status if they use LinkedIn Recruiter. If you work somewhere that actively recruits on LinkedIn be aware of this.

Updating your profile in small increments over time looks less suspicious than a sudden complete overhaul.
