Apply to 3 Carefully Chosen Roles

WEEK 2DAY 1TASK 1

Apply to 3 Carefully Chosen Roles

As someone currently employed your time is more limited than a full-time job seeker. Three highly targeted applications will serve you better than five generic ones. Every role you apply to should represent a genuine step up in title, compensation, responsibility, or work environment.

WHY THIS MATTERS

As someone currently employed your time is more limited than a full-time job seeker. Three highly targeted applications will serve you better than five generic ones. Every role you apply to should represent a genuine step up in title, compensation, responsibility, or work environment.

BEFORE YOU START

Open your job search tracker and your resume folder. Do this outside of work hours — morning before work, lunch break, or evening.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

Search during off-hours only Never job search on your work computer or work network. Use your personal laptop or phone on your home wifi or mobile data. Many companies monitor network traffic and some even use software that flags job board activity on work devices.

2
Step 2

Screen roles carefully For each role ask yourself: Is this better than what I have now? Does it offer growth I cannot get in my current position? Would I be genuinely excited to go to work there? If the answer to any of these is no, skip it.

3
Step 3

Customize your resume for each role Make a copy of your master resume for each application. Update the summary to match the role. Adjust bullet points to highlight the most relevant experience. Save as PDF.

4
Step 4

Write a cover letter for each application Keep it brief. Opening: why this company and role excite you. Middle: one specific relevant achievement. Closing: confident call to action. Do not mention your current employment situation unless directly asked.

5
Step 5

Submit and log everything Apply through the specified channel. Log the company, role, date, and URL in your tracker. Set a follow-up reminder for 7 days.

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Never use your work email address for job applications. Use a personal email only.

Do not list your current manager as a reference without telling them first. Most reference checks happen late in the process but be prepared.

If a posting asks for your current salary or asks why you are leaving your current role you can leave those fields blank or address them vaguely until you are further along in the process.
