Customize Your Resume for Each Role

WEEK 1DAY 5TASK 2

Customize Your Resume for Each Role

Sending the same resume to every job is one of the most common job search mistakes. Hiring managers can tell immediately when a resume is generic. Customizing takes 10-15 minutes per application and dramatically increases your response rate. You are not rewriting your resume — you are adjusting it to speak directly to each role.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Sending the same resume to every job is one of the most common job search mistakes. Hiring managers can tell immediately when a resume is generic. Customizing takes 10-15 minutes per application and dramatically increases your response rate. You are not rewriting your resume — you are adjusting it to speak directly to each role.

ACTION PLAN

Complete these steps

1
Step 1

Keep your master resume intact Never edit your master resume directly. Make a copy for each application. Name it: FirstName_LastName_CompanyName_Role.pdf

2
Step 2

Update your professional summary Change the job title in your summary to match the exact title in the posting. Adjust 1-2 sentences to mention something specific about this company or role.

3
Step 3

Add relevant keywords Go back to the job posting. Find skills, tools, and phrases that appear in the posting but are missing from your resume. Add them naturally where you can.

4
Step 4

Adjust your bullet points Look at the top 3-4 requirements in the job posting. Make sure your most relevant experience is highlighted in your bullet points for your recent roles.

5
Step 5

Save as PDF Always submit your resume as a PDF unless the employer specifically asks for Word. PDF preserves your formatting across all devices.
