Open a blank document or your Rising Careers tracker. Have your most recent resume nearby for reference.
Complete these steps
Write your target job title Write down the exact job title you are looking for. Be as specific as possible. If you are open to a few similar titles, write all of them down.
Examples:
"Marketing Manager" OR "Senior Marketing Coordinator" OR "Brand Manager"
"Software Engineer" OR "Full Stack Developer" OR "Frontend Developer"
"Project Manager" OR "Program Manager" OR "Operations Manager"
Define your target industry Write down the industry or industries you want to work in. If you are open to multiple entries, write them all.
Examples:
Tech, SaaS, E-commerce
Healthcare, Pharmaceuticals
Finance, Banking, Insurance
Non-profit, Education
Define your target location Write down where you want to work:
City and province/state
Remote, hybrid or in-person preference
Are you willing to relocate? If yes, where?
Define your target company size: Small startup (under 50 people), mid-size company (50-500), large corporation (500+), or no preference?
Write your complete target role statement Combine everything into one sentence. Example: "I am looking for a Marketing Manager role at a mid-size tech or e-commerce company in Vancouver, BC, open to hybrid or remote work."
Tips for success
Be specific but not so narrow you eliminate good opportunities
If you are truly open to multiple roles write them all down — you can have 2-3 targets
Revisit this statement at the end of Week 1 and adjust if needed
