Your resume is your first impression. Before you can improve it you need to see it through a recruiter's eyes β€” objectively and critically. Most resumes have outdated information, weak bullet points, or missing sections that are costing people interviews. Today you identify the problems so tomorrow you can fix them.

Pull up your current resume. If you have multiple versions pick the most recent one. Open a notepad to write down your observations.

Step 1

€” Read your resume like a stranger Pretend you have never seen this resume before. Read it from top to bottom. Ask yourself: "Would I hire this person based on what I'm reading?"

€” Check your contact information Make sure the following are current and correct:

Full name

Professional email address (firstname.lastname@gmail.com not partygirl99@hotmail.com)

Phone number

LinkedIn URL

City and province/state (you do not need your full address)

Step 3

€” Check your professional summary Do you have one? Is it specific to your target role or generic? Does it say what you do and what value you bring? Note whether it needs to be written or rewritten.

€” Review your work experience For each role ask:

Are the dates correct?

Does each bullet point start with an action verb?

Do any bullets mention specific results or numbers?

Is anything outdated or irrelevant?

€” Check your skills section Do you have one? Does it include both hard skills (tools, software, certifications) and soft skills (leadership, communication)?

€” Write down 3 things that need improving Be specific. "Needs more numbers" or "Missing a summary section" or "Skills section is outdated."
