1
Step 1

€” Send a message to each chosen reference asking permission Template: "Hi [Name], I hope you are doing well. I am currently exploring some new opportunities quietly and wanted to reach out to ask if you would be willing to serve as a reference. I always valued our time working together at [Company] and believe your perspective on my [specific skills] would be really valuable. I am targeting [type of role] at [type of company]. Would you be comfortable being a reference?"

2
Step 2

€” When they agree brief them on your search Share: your target role type, the skills and achievements you most want them to emphasize, that you would like to keep your search confidential, and your updated resume.

3
Step 3

€” Specifically mention confidentiality Ask them not to mention your search to mutual contacts or colleagues from your current company. Most people will understand and respect this without needing to be asked but asking explicitly is wise.

4
Step 4

€” Keep your references updated as your search progresses

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Briefing your references significantly improves the quality of the reference they give. A prepared reference is a strong reference.

Always thank your references after you land your new role. These relationships matter beyond this job search.
