Identify Gaps and Address Them
Most career changers have skill gaps relative to people who have been in the target field for years. Identifying those gaps and taking concrete steps to address them shows employers that you are self-aware, proactive, and serious about the transition. Even small steps matter significantly.

Step by Step
Review the job postings you have applied to or saved Look for skills, tools, or qualifications that appear repeatedly across postings that you do not currently have.
Categorize your gaps Divide them into three categories:
Quick wins: Skills you could learn or demonstrate within a few weeks through a free course, tutorial, or project
Medium term: Skills that take a few months of study or practice to develop
Long term: Certifications or qualifications that require significant time or investment
Address at least one quick win this week Find a free or low-cost resource and start working on it today. Options include:
Google, HubSpot, LinkedIn, and Coursera all offer free certifications in many fields
YouTube tutorials for specific tools or software
A small personal project that lets you practice the skill hands-on
Add any completed certifications or courses to your resume and LinkedIn immediately Even a course in progress is worth noting. It signals active effort.
Tips for success
Do not try to close every gap at once. Focus on the ones that appear most frequently in job postings for your target role.
A certification from a recognized provider carries more weight than a generic online course. Google, HubSpot, and LinkedIn certifications are well regarded and free.
Employers understand that career changers are in a learning process. Demonstrating that you are actively doing the work matters more than having already closed every gap.
