Do a Full Mock Interview

WEEK 4DAY 2TASK 2

Do a Full Mock Interview

For recent graduates who may have little or no professional interview experience a full mock interview is one of the highest-leverage things you can do. Reading your answers and saying them under realistic conditions are completely different experiences. The only way to build genuine interview confidence is to practice the real thing.

WHY THIS MATTERS

For recent graduates who may have little or no professional interview experience a full mock interview is one of the highest-leverage things you can do. Reading your answers and saying them under realistic conditions are completely different experiences. The only way to build genuine interview confidence is to practice the real thing.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

Find someone to practice with. A friend, parent, former professor, or career advisor all work. They do not need to know your industry. They need to ask questions and give you honest feedback.

2
Step 2

If no practice partner is available record yourself on your phone or computer. Do not stop the recording. Simulate real conditions as closely as possible.

3
Step 3

Run through this sequence: Tell me about yourself (90 seconds) Why are you interested in this role and company? Walk me through your most relevant experience. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team and had to navigate a conflict or challenge. Tell me about a project you are proud of and why. What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness? Where do you see yourself in three years? Why should we hire you over other candidates? What questions do you have for us?

4
Step 4

Get specific feedback on: Clarity and focus of your answers Length (most answers should be 90 seconds to 2 minutes) Filler words (um, like, you know) Confidence and tone How well you framed non-traditional examples from school or part-time work Specific examples vs vague generalities

5
Step 5

Identify your 2 weakest answers and practice those specifically until they improve.

Tips The "why should we hire you over other candidates" question is particularly important for recent graduates. Prepare a confident and specific answer that focuses on what makes you unique rather than just listing your skills. Never apologize for your examples before you share them. Say them directly and let them stand on their own. Video recording yourself is uncomfortable but genuinely useful.
