WHY THIS MATTERS

Consistency in your application volume is one of the most reliable predictors of job search success. Five targeted, well-prepared applications per day builds real momentum and gives you enough data to understand which types of roles and companies are responding to your background.

BEFORE YOU START

Open your job search tracker and resume folder. Have your return-to-work resume ready β€” the version that addresses your gap confidently and leads with your strongest experience and transferable skills.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

€” Search across multiple platforms Check LinkedIn Jobs, Indeed, Glassdoor, and the career pages of companies on your target list. Also check whether there are any return-to-work programs relevant to your field. Many large companies now run formal returnship programs specifically designed for professionals re-entering the workforce after a career break.

2
Step 2

€” Search specifically for returnship and return-to-work programs Search terms that can surface these opportunities:

Returnship [your field]

Return to work program [your industry]

Career re-entry [your target role]

Relaunch program [your city or industry]

Companies including Amazon, Goldman Sachs, IBM, and many others run formal returnship programs. These are designed for exactly your situation and are often a strong entry point back into the workforce.

3
Step 3

€” Screen roles thoughtfully Apply to roles where you meet at least 60 to 70% of the requirements. Your previous experience counts even if it was gained before your break. Do not automatically rule yourself out of roles that interest you because of the gap.

4
Step 4

€” Customize your resume for each role Make a copy of your master resume for each application. Update the summary to speak directly to the role. Adjust bullet points to highlight the most relevant experience from your career before your break. If you did any relevant work, volunteering, or learning during your time away include it where appropriate.

5
Step 5

€” Write a cover letter for every application Cover letters are particularly important for returning professionals because they give you the space to address your gap proactively, on your own terms, and frame it as a strength rather than a liability.

6
Step 6

€” Submit and log everything Apply through the specified channel. Log every application in your tracker and set a follow-up reminder for 7 days.

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Return-to-work programs and returnships are not widely advertised. Searching directly on company websites and reaching out to HR departments is often more effective than job boards for finding them.

Do not let the gap on your resume discourage you from applying to roles that genuinely match your experience. Many hiring managers are far more understanding about career breaks than candidates expect.

If you completed any courses, certifications, volunteer work, or freelance projects during your time away these belong on your resume and can help address concerns about the gap.
