Analyze Your Application Data
Your tracker is not just a log. It is a source of intelligence about your job search. Patterns in your data tell you whether your resume is working, whether you are targeting the right types of roles and companies, and where your time is generating results versus where it is not.
Your tracker is not just a log. It is a source of intelligence about your job search. Patterns in your data tell you whether your resume is working, whether you are targeting the right types of roles and companies, and where your time is generating results versus where it is not.
Step by Step
Open your tracker and review all applications submitted so far Note the types of roles, company sizes, platforms used, and which ones generated responses.
Calculate your response rate by category Break it down:
Large companies vs small companies
Applications with a cover letter vs without
Roles where you met 70% or more of requirements vs stretch applications
Applications through job boards vs direct company career pages
Applications to companies where you had an alumni or personal connection vs no connection
Identify your strongest performing category and commit to doing more of it
Identify your weakest performing category and reduce time spent on it
Write one specific strategic adjustment for the rest of your search
Common high-impact adjustments for recent graduates:
Shifting focus to smaller companies which often hire more on potential
Leaning harder into alumni-connected applications since these consistently outperform cold applications for recent grads
Adding more portfolio or project evidence to applications to compensate for limited experience
Narrowing the role focus to the 1 or 2 types of positions generating the most interest
Tips for success
For recent graduates response rates below 5% after 3 weeks may indicate your resume needs adjustment or your targets need refinement. Contact your university career services office for a free resume review.
If Handshake or alumni-connected applications are generating better results than general job boards shift more of your time there.
