Adjust Your Strategy Based on Results
A job search is not a set-and-forget process. What is working deserves more attention. What is not working deserves an honest look. Week 2 is when you have enough data to start making informed adjustments.
A job search is not a set-and-forget process. What is working deserves more attention. What is not working deserves an honest look. Week 2 is when you have enough data to start making informed adjustments.
Step by Step
Identify what is working Are certain types of roles getting more responses? Are applications to smaller companies performing better than large ones? Are direct outreach messages getting replies?
Identify what is not working If you have sent 20 applications with zero responses your resume or targeting needs attention. If your outreach messages are being ignored your message may need refinement.
Make one specific adjustment Do not overhaul everything at once. Pick the single most impactful change and implement it for Week 3.
Common adjustments:
Narrowing or broadening your target role
Rewriting your resume summary
Changing your outreach message
Shifting focus from large companies to smaller ones
Applying to a different geographic area or adding remote roles
Tips for success
Give any adjustment at least a week before evaluating whether it is working. One day of data is not enough.
If you are genuinely unsure what to change ask someone in your network with hiring experience to review your resume and give honest feedback.
