Step by Step
Find someone to practice with. A trusted friend, former colleague, or mentor works well. They do not need to know your industry. They need to ask questions and give honest feedback.
If no practice partner is available record yourself. Set a timer and do not stop the recording. The goal is to simulate real conditions.
Run through this sequence: Tell me about yourself (90 seconds) Why are you interested in this role and company? Walk me through your most relevant experience. Tell me about a time you faced a significant challenge and how you handled it. Tell me about a time you drove a significant result or improvement. What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness? Why are you looking to leave your current role? Where do you see yourself in three years? What questions do you have for us?
Get specific feedback on: Clarity and focus of your answers Length (most answers should be 90 seconds to 2 minutes) Filler words (um, like, you know) Confidence and tone Specific examples vs vague generalities How you handled the "why are you leaving" question specifically
Identify your 2 weakest answers and practice those specifically until they improve.
Tips The "why are you leaving" question deserves particular attention for employed candidates. It should sound positive, forward-focused, and completely genuine. Practice it until there is no hesitation and no negativity. Video recording yourself is uncomfortable but genuinely useful. You will notice things about your delivery you would never catch otherwise.
