Step by Step

1
Step 1

Prepare your response to "What are your salary expectations?" Early process response: "Based on my research into current market rates for [role] positions in [city] and my experience level I am targeting a range of [your range]. I am happy to discuss the full compensation package once we have both confirmed this is a strong mutual fit."

2
Step 2

Prepare for "What were you earning before your break?" A professional response: "My previous compensation was [amount or range] but given the time that has passed and the changes in the market I think current market rates for this role are the more relevant benchmark. Based on my research I am targeting [your range]."

3
Step 3

Prepare a negotiation opener if you receive an offer below your target "Thank you so much for this offer. I am genuinely excited about this opportunity. The base is slightly below where I was hoping to land based on my current market research. Is there any flexibility to get closer to [your target]?"

Step 4

Practice all three responses out loud until they sound natural and confident

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Negotiating as a returning professional is completely appropriate and expected. Your years of experience before your break have real value and your compensation should reflect that.

Never accept an offer on the spot. It is completely professional to say you need 24 to 48 hours to review it thoughtfully.
