Research Market Salary for Your Target Role
Knowing the market rate for your target role in your specific location is non-negotiable. Career changers sometimes either undersell themselves because they feel they cannot justify a high salary or price themselves out of opportunities by anchoring to their previous salary in a different field. Research removes the guesswork from both mistakes.

Step by Step
Research salary ranges on multiple platforms Check Glassdoor Salaries, LinkedIn Salary, Indeed Salary, and Payscale. Search your exact target job title filtered by your location. Note the range across all platforms.
Be realistic about where you fall in the range. Career changers often enter a new field slightly below where their total years of experience might suggest because some of that experience is not directly applicable. Being realistic about this does not mean underselling yourself. It means targeting the right part of the range.
Consider: How much of your transferable experience is genuinely directly relevant to this role? Candidates with very strong transferable skills can often negotiate toward the middle of the range. Candidates whose previous experience is less directly applicable may start closer to the lower end.
Separate your previous salary from your expectations in the new field If you earned significantly more in your previous career do not anchor your expectations to that number when entering a new field. Research what the new role pays and negotiate within that context. Referencing your previous salary in a different field as a justification for a higher number in a new one often does not land well.
Identify your three numbers Your target salary: The number you would be genuinely happy with based on your research. Your minimum acceptable salary: The lowest you would accept given your financial situation and cost of living. Your opening ask: 10% above your target to give room to negotiate.
Tips for success
Total compensation includes more than base salary. Benefits, remote flexibility, professional development budget, and growth trajectory all matter. A slightly lower base at a company with strong growth potential in your new field may be worth more than a higher base with no room to move.
If you are currently earning more in your previous role than the new field pays it is worth thinking clearly about whether you are genuinely comfortable with that trade-off before you get into offer conversations.
