Prepare for the Salary Conversation
Step by Step
Step by Step
Prepare your response to "What are your salary expectations?"
Early process response: "I am focused on finding the right fit at this stage. Based on my research into market rates and my current compensation I am targeting a range of [your range]. I am happy to discuss the full package once we have both confirmed this is a strong mutual fit."
Prepare for "What are you currently making?" In many places this question is now illegal but it still comes up. A confident redirect: "I prefer to focus on the market rate for this specific role rather than my current compensation. Based on my research I am targeting [your range]."
Prepare your negotiation opener if you receive an offer below your target "Thank you so much for the offer. I am genuinely excited about this opportunity. The base salary is slightly below where I was hoping to land based on my research and experience. Is there any flexibility to get closer to [your target]?"
Practice all three responses out loud until they sound natural and calm
Tips for success
Confidence in salary conversations comes from knowing your number and believing you are worth it. Both of those come from research and preparation.
Never accept an offer on the spot. It is completely professional to say you need 24 to 48 hours to review it.
