Update LinkedIn to Reflect Your Transition
Your LinkedIn profile needs to communicate your career change clearly and confidently. A profile that looks like it belongs to someone in your old field will attract the wrong attention and confuse the right audience. Today you make sure your profile speaks directly to where you are going.
Your LinkedIn profile needs to communicate your career change clearly and confidently. A profile that looks like it belongs to someone in your old field will attract the wrong attention and confuse the right audience. Today you make sure your profile speaks directly to where you are going.
Step by Step
Update your headline Your headline should reflect your target role, not your previous career. If you are in transition a good approach is: "[Target Role] | Transitioning from [Previous Field] | [Key Transferable Skill]"
Example: "Aspiring UX Designer | Transitioning from Psychology | Human Behavior and Research Specialist"
Rewrite your About section Use your career change narrative as the foundation. Write in first person and make sure it answers: who were you, what are you moving toward, why, and what makes you valuable in the new field.
Update your Featured section Add any projects, coursework, certifications, or portfolio pieces relevant to your new field. Remove anything that only speaks to your old career.
Add new skills relevant to your target field Remove or deprioritize skills that are purely from your old field if they are not transferable. Add skills from your new field, including ones you are actively developing.
Tips for success
Being explicit about your career change on LinkedIn is almost always better than trying to hide it. Recruiters and hiring managers appreciate transparency and it saves everyone time.
Connecting your old experience to your new direction in your headline and summary makes your profile feel cohesive rather than confusing.
