Request One Informational Interview

WEEK 2DAY 3TASK 3

Request One Informational Interview

Informational interviews give you insider knowledge about your target field, help you refine your positioning, and build relationships that often lead to referrals. For career changers they are particularly valuable because they give you the chance to make a human impression before your resume can be judged on experience alone.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Informational interviews give you insider knowledge about your target field, help you refine your positioning, and build relationships that often lead to referrals. For career changers they are particularly valuable because they give you the chance to make a human impression before your resume can be judged on experience alone.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

Identify one person worth having an informational interview with Ideally someone who has made a similar transition or who works in a role or company you are strongly targeting.

2
Step 2

Send a request Template: "Hi [Name], I am currently transitioning from [previous field] into [new field] and your career path caught my attention. I would love to learn more about your experience and get your perspective on breaking into this field from a non-traditional background. Would you be open to a 20 minute virtual coffee chat? I am completely flexible on timing and promise to keep it brief."

3
Step 3

Prepare 5 questions specific to career changers

What skills from non-traditional backgrounds do you see employers in this field value most?

What was the hardest part of breaking into this field and how did you navigate it?

What would you do differently if you were starting your career in this field today?

Are there any certifications or experiences you would recommend for someone making this transition?

Is there anyone else you would suggest I speak with?

4
Step 4

Log the request and follow up once after 10 days

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Informational interviews with people who have made similar transitions are gold. They can tell you exactly what worked, what did not, and who to talk to next.

Always send a thank you within 24 hours. Reference something specific from the conversation.
