Write a Strong Cover Letter Template

WEEK 2DAY 3TASK 2

Write a Strong Cover Letter Template

Cover letters matter more for recent graduates than for experienced candidates because you have less work history to speak for you. A well-written cover letter that shows genuine enthusiasm, relevant skills, and knowledge of the company can be the difference between getting an interview and being passed over.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Cover letters matter more for recent graduates than for experienced candidates because you have less work history to speak for you. A well-written cover letter that shows genuine enthusiasm, relevant skills, and knowledge of the company can be the difference between getting an interview and being passed over.

Step by Step

1
Step 1

Understand the structure of a strong graduate cover letter Paragraph 1: Hook and enthusiasm. Why this company and role specifically. Paragraph 2: Your most relevant experience or project and what it demonstrates about you. Paragraph 3: What you bring and why you are excited about contributing. Closing: Confident call to action.

2
Step 2

Write a master template

Opening example: "I am applying for the [Job Title] role at [Company] with genuine excitement. I have been following [Company]'s work in [area] for [time period] and the way your team approaches [specific thing] aligns closely with both my academic background and the direction I want to take my career."

Middle example: "During my [internship/capstone/project], I had the opportunity to [what you did], which gave me hands-on experience in [relevant skill]. That experience taught me [specific lesson or capability] and I am excited to bring that into a professional environment."

Closing example: "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background in [area] can contribute to [Company]'s work. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of connecting."

3
Step 3

Save your template and customize for each application Change the company name, role, and specific references for every application. A generic cover letter is obvious and ineffective.

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Do not start your cover letter with "I am writing to apply for." It is the most overused opening in existence. Start with something that makes them want to keep reading.

Keep it to one page and three to four paragraphs. Hiring managers do not read long cover letters.
