WHY THIS MATTERS

Quality beats quantity in job applications every time. Sending 3 well-researched, tailored applications will get you further than sending 20 generic ones. Today you learn how to identify strong matches so you spend your time on applications that are most likely to get a response.

BEFORE YOU START

Have your job search tracker open and ready to log what you find.

ACTION PLAN

Complete these steps

1
Step 1

Know what a strong match looks like A strong match is a role where you meet at least 70% of the requirements. You do not need to meet 100%. Research shows women tend to only apply when they meet 100% of requirements while men apply at 60%. Apply if you are a strong but not perfect match.

2
Step 2

Search on multiple platforms Search for your target role on:

LinkedIn Jobs

Indeed

Glassdoor

Company career pages you bookmarked yesterday

Industry-specific job boards if relevant to your field

3
Step 3

Evaluate each posting For each job you find ask:

Do I have at least 70% of the required skills and experience?

Is this a role I am genuinely excited about?

Is the company on my target list or one I would want to work for?

Are the location and work arrangement right for me?

4
Step 4

Save 3 strong matches Do not apply yet. Save the job posting URLs, copy the full job description into a document, and log them in your tracker.

5
Step 5

Read each posting carefully For each of your 3 matches read the full posting. Note the key requirements, keywords, and anything specific about the role that you can reference in your application.

COACHING NOTES

Tips for success

Set up job alerts on LinkedIn and Indeed for your target role so new postings come to you automatically

Apply to roles within 48-72 hours of them being posted — early applicants have a higher response rate

If a role has been posted for more than 30 days it may already be filled — prioritize fresh postings
